Homeless in Pittsburgh

Get a first-person view of homelessness at a March 12 screening of The Bridge, an independent documentary about homelessness in Pittsburgh. It follows Al Ferguson, part of the Hot Metal Bridge faith community, as he transitions from living under a train trestle in the South Side to his own apartment.  Hot Metal is hosting a screening at 7 p.m. and Al will be there to answer questions along with the film’s director and Hot Metal’s homeless ministry leaders.

10-Fold Focus on Sustainable Agriculture

Visit live Thursday, March 10 to hear stories farmers who are becoming agents of transformation by learning new ways of working with the land, new crops to grow, and techniques to pass along their knowledge to other farmers. There will be a live update at 12:00 noon with an opportunity ask questions, or you can chat all day long with others who are interested in this project.

Online Bible Study

The United Methodist Church is set to debut an online Bible study March 14, where participants will have an opportunity to explore and discuss contemporary topics and how they relate to the Christian faith in response to the call to Rethink Church. Participants who sign on for the Encounter Faith Bible study, available for free at, will be looking through a lens of faith at timely issues making headlines and creating conversation, such as the demonstrations in North Africa and the Middle East.

Wesley Source of UMC Stand on Collective Bargaining

Methodist support for the right of workers and employers to bargain collectively dates back to John Wesley in the 18th Century and the 1908 Social Creed, writes Wayne Rhodes in the current issue of Faith in Action. Wesley built his Methodist movement from the ranks of beleaguered workers who heard his call for justice, fair wages and better working conditions. Read more.

Imagine No Malaria Campaign Tops $15 Million

Check out the story on the INM progess, including quotes from Rev. Eric Hoeke, who attended the recent U2charist fundraiser with Rev. Bruce Stolling’s band The Reply at Pittsburgh’s Hard Rock Café. The U2charist was the day after the ZimJam concert with Eric and Tara Park drew a sellout crowd of about 600 to Christ UMC in Bethel Park to raise funds for INM and The Nyadire Connection.

Flooding in various regions of the United States means people need Cleaning Buckets (a/k/a Flood Buckets).  If you’ve got the ingredients for those buckets (UMCOR – Cleaning Bucket) or have completed buckets, please get them to the Conference Center or the Mission Barn (Directions to the Mission Barn).

Call to Prayer, Vigil for PA Leaders

UMAdvocacy in Pennsylvania knows that prayer works. The group is asking United Methodists across the state to join in prayer for Governor Corbett and our legislators. Pennsylvania faces a $4 Billion deficit, and the governor is unveiling his 2011-2012 budget plan on Tuesday March 8. They will have to make tough choices. Pray they will produce a moral budget for the Commonwealth. A vigil is scheduled in Harrisburg March 8. Read more and download a bulletin insert.
